I know money is tight all over but I wanted to pass this on. It’s a message from Kit White who has been a long time member of Nightgig.com

my friend, alice, has always been an inspiration to me. heck, she still is.
i enjoy hanging out with someone so creative! she’s taught me tons of cool things and we’ve had plenty of fun just sitting around working in altered books or other artistic projects as we visit. she has a great eye for art and an excellent sense of design.

she’s as big a geek as i am, too. her fandom is the marvel comic book, Daredevil.
you should see her daredevil quilts! can’t find any current links to them, but they are sooo beautiful!
no, these aren’t your grandmother’s type quilt. they’re gorgeous examples of thread paintings and fabric collage with hand beaded fringe on some of the pieces.
it’s even approved by the joe quesada, the current editor-in-chief over at marvel and david mack, both of whom have seen her work. mack even signed several of the pieces featuring his art.

last year, alice began getting active in a regional chapter for the Foundation for Fighting Blindness (www.blindness.org).
you see, alice has been diagnosed with early onset macular degeneration. that’s right, the most creative person i know, with one of the best eyes for visual art i’ve seen, will lose her sight.

this is a devasting thing, but here’s another reason alice is an inspiration to me. she’s still going and not letting it stop her.
she has started a new business making braille tshirts (www.brailletshirts.com). no, it’s not screenprinted where only the sighted can see it, but she uses metallic studs or swarovski crystals to make actual text that the blind can read!
she can do custom phrases, too.
i have a few of these shirts and they are truly nifty.
she is also planning on going back to school to learn to become a braille transcriber.
truly amazing, isn’t she?

the primary event for a FFB chapter is a VisionWalk, to raise money for research for denegerative eye diseases such as Macular Degeneration, Stargart Disease, Usher Syndrome, Rentintis Pigmentosa, etc., and find cures. This weekend is Memphis’ first VisionWalk and alice has a team. If you can be in Memphis, please come join the team!
Can’t be in memphis? You can donate to the cause. Don’t have much? hey, they’ll accept $5 donations! I believe alice is making tshirts (the design is one her VisionWalk page and giving them to those who make a donation of $25 or higher…
i have volunteered to do face painting at the event, but i plan on walking, too, if time permits.

Please support Alice and the FFB!

From Wes…

Hey Peeps!

The YHT one-shot is featured in this month’s Wizard Magazine (#191) in the Indie Buzz section of the Secret Stash. Here’s what Wizard has to say about my little comic strip:

It’s not often that webcomics make a successful transition from online to the printed page, so it speaks volumes that this heavenly little bastard has become one of the favored comics around the Wizard offices. Spotlighting the hilarious life of newlyweds Andy and Katie, this one-shot collects the best of 2006′s online strips by Wes Molebash, with a brand-new cover from Scott Kurtz (PvP) so easily accessible for new readers it may as well be the first issue. With a precise vision of male geek life and the hotties who love us, YHT will have you cracking up and wondering how Molebash snuck a camera into your life.

Freakin’ rad, eh?

- Wes

Very cool, and be sure to check out our own Madscott’s guest strip form Friday!

The Hype Machine tracks a variety of MP3 blogs. If a post contains MP3 links, it adds those links to its database and displays them on the front page.

Some of the frequently accessed tracks are cached by the Hype Machine server, much like Google Search caches web pages, to reduce load on the bloggers’ servers and protect their bandwidth. Those tracks are NOT available for download, but you can preview them via the “listen” links that are next to each track or using your media player.

The blog that posted a particular track is identified under every track by name and with a “read post” link that leads to the blog post itself. If you enjoyed a track someone posted, stop by and let them know!

You can purchase CDs and individual tracks by using the “amazon” and “itunes” links that appear next to most tracks. Each purchase you make via the Amazon and iTunes links supports both the artists and the Hype Machine. Please buy and enjoy.

Ok.. Did some testing with talkshoe www.talkshoe.com.

While the interactivity part would be cool, the audio quality lasks big time. Part of the quality issue has to do with not being able to use Skype, for free anyway. Have to use skype out, and that costs $$, we were able to use The Gizmo Project which you can dial a Voip IP address (Not availabel in Skype) but the quality was crap.

I did dial in with what skype minutes I have (Bought long ago to interview people who don’t /can’t use skype) and The quality was much much better.

Here is the question I have for you.

Would an interactive call in Gigcast once a month or so be worth setting up? the quality woul dbe the same as a bad phone call, (Unless someone wants to buy us all Unlimited Skype for 30 bucks each).

Or would you rather have the roundtables be done the non interactive way, but with a bit better quality (Better than last time, with a bit more effort we can make everyone sound purty)

Thoughts? Ideas?

Forum Post about this here.

On a recent Girls With Slingshots update Danielle Corsetto posted a “How I Do Comics” tutorial. This strikes me as exciting on a few levels.

Danielle kicks ass (everything else I wrote before was the product of sugar and wishful thinking. I have NOT met Danielle YET!)

GWS is one of my favorite comics and any glimpse of how it’s done makes me happy. I’m not going to look a gift horse in the mouth. It’s not a ground breaking tutorial that makes me say “THAT”S THE TRICK!”. I am a process junkie seeing how she roughs, then she moves on makes me excited to draw. She does do something I don’t and it might be something I change. She adds the word balloons and then the art. I’m the other way.

Like her comic her tutorial is clean well done and presented in a professional fashion. It’s a giant reminder that there are some basic steps I keep skipping that derail my process every time.

So yea I recommend you hop over and check it out. I’m personally going to try her method out and see if it helps me stay on top of updates.

Hey

If you are subscribed to The Gigcast feed, you may have notices a PDF file in your aggregator this morning. It’s a gift form Scott Sigler and The Gigcast, actually.. it’s a bribe, to get you to help promote, and hopefully buy Ancestor, the new Horror Sci-fi thriller form Scott Sigler, on April 1st(at noon EST), and put this one-time podcast only novel at the top of the charts!

If you are the type who grabs his Gigcast manually you can get the Free PDF HERE

Many of you may have heard the podcast of this novel, and you still can form www.scottsigler.net and PodioBooks.com.

Here is an excerpt from Scotts’ e-mail to The Gigcast…

I’m trying to put myself and Podcasting on the map by making my print novel ANCESTOR hit #1 on Amazon.com. I think this will be a Big Friggin’ Deal if I pull it off, but it won’t be easy. To help make that happen, I’m giving away the whole thing as a tricked-out PDF. If you’ve heard of Corey Doctorow, that’s where I got the idea. I’m taking it one step further by having podcasters put the PDF link in their RSS feeds, and on their show notes.

GOAL:
Get hundreds of thousands of people to see the PDF. Some will read it and be done, some will toss it, and some will be intrigued enough to buy the dang thing in print.

So, help a fellow to make his NightGig his Day Gig, and Download the PDF and Then on April First at Noon EST.. buy the book Ancestor from Amazon.com. Thats APRIL 1st.. at NOON for it to count towards the new stats and make Ancestor #1!

You can use this nifty link HERE….

The gigcast should be up later tonight or tomorrow but while you wait I wanted to share with you a true GEM of a comic site. I’m even a little cautious calling it a comic site because it’s really good art. Not in the hey the art is good on this comic, I mean that it’s ART!

I know nothing about Adam Cohen other then he does the website www.mosetoon.com. I will have to do some searching to find out more. I hope he’s not also famous for stomping on small animals or feeding babies glass. That would just spoil it for me. Maybe.

I came across it on my daily blog crawl. So I need to give credit to Drawn.ca and to Diva Lea for reminding me about Drawn.ca.

Last night we recorded the interview half of this weeks Gigcast with Krishna M. Sadasivam of PC Weenies. We had a blast and wanted to return his blog love. Krishna is living the Nightgig dream. He started out working a day gig that paid the bills and was drawing PC Weenies for fun and the love of a few readers. With some hard work and motivation he has managed to turn his nightgig into a full time day job as a freelance artist and art teacher. Anyone interested in making your own grove in the wide world of art should take some time to visit with Krishna. I’m glad we did.

Look for that interview in this weeks Gigcast.

I had the great pleasure of stopping in my local comic shop. Sadly I didn’t spend as much money as I have in the past. I don’t get in as often as I used to and my subscriptions have ran out or the books I had been getting have been canceled or turned to crap. There was a couple of happy moments where I jumped up and down and acted like a dork. I picked up issue #2 of The Imaginaries and The Devils Panties 7 & 8.

Imaginaries is a pretty interesting read. The Imaginaries world is the place where all of your imaginary friends go once you forget or give up on them. It does at moments read like a “what if Superman had been in the movie Who Framed Roger Rabbit” comic. I like the world he is developing. Not giving to much away but I like how they explain the Teddy Bear Gestapo as not being all there. It seems that because Teddy Bears are not completely fake they can be dragged in and out of the real world and that is causing them to gain multiple personalities. I recomend it, at least for the moment. It has the possibilities to be a great book. The art and story are very strong, I would only fear that a world that loose could easily fall apart without some care.

The Devils Panties (the comic) is exactly what you would think it is. It’s Jennie Breeden in print. You can finally hold on to it and love it and pet it and call it George. That said obviously I’m a fan and asking the guys at the store they say that it sells well. One even mentioned that it brought in a few new regulars. Yea! I’ve can’t really complaine. I’m not sure I would have picked it up had I never read The Devils Panties before but it had all the funny that I get online in a big easy to carry format. It’s got a tough road ahead of it. It sits on the shelf very near classic comics like Captain America and we all know Cap is a no funny business kinda guy. Maybe a little Devils Panties humor will loosen up his red white and blue shorts.

It’s not instore yet but I wanted to point out that DJ Coffman (and Jason Embury) has been posting teasers on the Herobynight.net site. I’m a sucker and I’m hooked and I haven’t even bought issue #1 yet (that reminds me I should preorder). I know that your gonna tell me I’m an idiot and I can handel that, but DJ’s style is starting to remind me of Ron Garney’s style.

Here is DJ’s cover on issue #2

Here is one of my favorite Captain America covers.

Maybe it’s just the feel of the art but that’s the vibe I get.

I’ll cut this off now and see you all again the next time I get by the comic shop.

Broken Voice Comics

I clicked on Broken Voices links back to their page and left it open as a reminder to read some later on. I can tell you now that I am so hooked on at least one of the comics hosted at BVC, Immortality. They describe it as “Immortality Classic SciFi featuring the richest man in the universe and his faithful android”. I instantly found it cool, Like the first time I saw the Flash Gordon movie back in the 80′s. It’s the story of Issac Emphemer and in classic sci-fi style he’s a BASTARD. just a few pages in and he’s atacking a planet and demanding things! One of the things I like is the narrative is given by the android who almost tells his master what he thinks of him but doesn’t have the programing for it.
I’m such a geek I know.

As you may know I’m an art whore. I judge comic books by the cover. Immortality is good, really good. It has the feel of a 70′s sci-fi comic. I find that the lines are sharper then you would expect out of an old sci-fi book. It gives it a new feel with a classic look. I love the big chunky space suits and the plain rocket shaped ships.

Check it out and say hello to Brokenvoice on comicspace.

It’s been a busy week so I thought I would fill you all in on it.

We’ve had site problems. It’s not necessarily the host issue it’s not necessarily our issue but together it’s a pain in the ass. I’m sure your all familiar with how we all need to watch bandwidth like a hawk before bandwidth eats us. We’re careful not to go over our bandwidth. We also keep an eye on file and folder sizes. We’re not just a comic community we’re a host. We don’t have a unlimited supply, but we’re good there as well. Our problem is that we’re using to much of the servers CPU.

So we’re pulling back some of the things that we had previously put into place. We’ll have to stop giving out wordpress to everyone and instead look at the multi blog version of word press. I’m also a little worried that a extra bit of code that the host now has us adding to our comic automation (QUACT) may be the problem. If that’s the case then we may have to look to more drastic measures and even ditch quact if we have to.

The other thing we’re doing is turning off any comment system that may be getting spammed to death. Again QUACT is a big victim here. Because there isn’t anyway to notify you of someone commenting on a past comic, there isn’t really a way to keep people from filling it up with spam links for google to look at.

We run things around here like a non-profit. If we need it we put it on next years budget and hope we can get it then.

Ok enough whining.

I want to talk about a few cool things.

Our traffic has gone up. Thank you if your a new visitor. I blame comicspace for some of it. Looking at referal traffic though it’s been from a little here and a little there. We’ver been acting more social and I guess you like us. I’m looking forward to seeing what Comicspaces hosting features will look like. Maybe with luck Comicspace will succeed in bringing comic fans and artists to other comic fans and artists. It’s one thing to know that there are tons of webcomics out there. It’s another to see a list.

In related cool news. Abacus comics friended us on Comicspace and I rushed over to see just what they are. Turns out that they are a new comic book publisher about to open their doors. They are also letting you read a comic called “Lullaby” online and for free. It’s drawn by Hector Sevilla and Mike S. Miller and Ben Avery. It’s well worth checking out. The guys over at Abacus have crazy good skills.

I’ll cut it short there but I should have more to say soon.

I am completely sold on it. I’m not always interested in comics who innovate as much as I am comics that put out solid art day after day. This struck me as a obvious blend of Internet meets great art. The whole idea being is that as you mouse over each panel the word bubbles pop up. Each panel is a little surprise I guess. What I found to be the best part is that you get to see how beautiful each panel looks without the speech bubbles in it.

I’m hoping more people have time to do this. I know it may be a ton of extra work for some and a big learning curve for others. The art whore in me loves this though so it has my vote.

JT was editing the show when an electrical storm decided to move into the house next door and throw a wild party. JT had to call the cops and there was shouting.
ok so maybe that all didn’t happen. The show will be a day late though because the storm was moving in.. the rest is all lies.

WOMEN WEBCOMICKER GRANT NAN: 2006 Recipients

Blue Canary, Kit White YAY!

Chasing Daylight, Ann Kennedy

Primary, Rachel Dukes

Lea Hernandez, October 24, 2006

The original press release for Women Webcomicker Grat NAN can be found at http://divalea.livejournal.com/343450.html

Before September 6th, for me to say I understood the reach of the Internet would mean that I knew it was an end run around many obstacles facing artists who wanted to share their work with the world. It’s an end run I have been making since 1991, a decade and a half of dodging and weaving, and in that, a bit more than ten as a webcomicker, one of the first to make the print-to-web transition with Rumble Girls: Silky Warrior Tansie. I started Women Webcomicker Grant Nan because I was challenged to do something about the problems I saw with comics, instead of just talking about them. Inspired by Peter Laird’s Xeric Grant for self-publishers and Dr. Keith P. Taylor’s Modest Needs foundation, which gives small gifts to people to help pay emergency expenses, I realized it was within my grasp to do something, and even a “small” something was still something.

Anyone was says that a $100. grant isn’t big has never experienced choosing between two things equally needed for a creator; food and supplies, but I bet everyone knows the giddy thrill of twenty dollars at just the right time.. On September 6th, I had a house fire that gutted my home and killed nine of eleven pets. Word spread quickly over the Internet, thanks to pushing by Gail Simone, Lisa Jonte, Scott Kurtz, and Eisner-winning retailer Richard Neal of Zeus Comics, (and enough many others to make a phone book), and I was buried (in a good way) in over 3,000 emails, and many donations, small ones, that added up to enough for me to take care of my family until my house is rebuilt. I was aware, before September 6th, of the ability of the Internet to make and reach friends, but I had no idea it had the ability to turn my life into a crossover between “It’s a Wonderful Life”, “Miracle on 34th Street” and “Ferris Beuller’s Day Off.” As Bugs Bunny might say, “I didn’t know ya cared.”

Now it is seven weeks since September 6th, and my understanding of the reach of the Internet is the same, but better. In giving to take care of my material needs, or even just writing notes of encouragement, people have given me immaterial gifts: the strength to pick up and go on, the motivation to be a better person, and a new focus on my own work to honor the thousands of tiny kindnesses with something in return.

I sincerely hope my tiny kindness of the Grant NAN can do for four other women in some way what has been done for me. I wish for these recipients much creative happiness, long careers as cartoonists, and friends like mine.

From Dj Koffman

Ok, Zach at Platinum put together a kickbutt HERO BY NIGHT site hosted on Drunk Duck. Check it out!

Also, thanks to everyone who signed up for the HERO-GRAM thing on herobynight.com, I’m going to try to keep that idea alive, and fit it in somehow to the new herobynight.com landing page that Platinum will be doing. I really like the idea of some sort of “tranmission” from the hero’s lair or something like that, and any time there’s breaking news about HBN, specials, etc… I can send out a dispatch to the faithful readers.

Also, there are more things planned on the Drunk Duck site, bonus sections, and a blog type deal that will hopefully be going on the next upgrade to Drunk Duck– but I’m not 100% sure on that. I am 100% sure that some exciting things are going down!

Hey Folks. I revieved this e-mail the other day. Seems there is a Webcomic ferret in trouble who needs your help!

Check it out, help if you can.

(From Mike, the guy from the Girls With Slingshots Fanclub/supporter thingie…)
I’m not sure if you have heard of Starline’s comic Candi (
http://www.candicomics.com/ ), it’s a semi autobiographical webcomic
with a style that has anime, Disney and David Willis’s influence in it.
With talking and flying ferrets, the squirrels mafia, and art teachers
from hell. Starline is a big fan of your comic, I’m sure you’ve seen her
fanart in the forums….

Well, Menjou the ferret is based on Starline’s ferret, Bobby, who has
just been diagnosed with Adrenal disease and has a bump on the head
which might be cancer. The operation cost so far for her is 750$ and
that doesn’t even count surgery.

I know I’m really pushing it here, but… could you be so kind to make a
small mention in your next news post or something? I’d be eternally
grateful if you
did! Her paypal address is starlinex@gmail.com

Paul Taylor of Wapsi Square already made a post about this issue ( http://pablowapsi.livejournal.com/53162.html )

JT has been busting his back and has updated both the Guests Page and The Drive-by Index. Please take a minute to click on some of the links and look at some of the great work we have reviewed and people we have talked with.

Jo has been adding show notes for us. This is a huge help as I’ve been swamped at work and haven’t been able to do it lately. Jo is doing a kick ass job and you can tell she has referenced material before. Seems like maybe she’s a grad student.

So JT has been asking for weeks for a 3 column layout for The Gigcast. The starts we’re aligned. The moon was pleased and I stumbled on a wordpress theme that I liked and had downloaded previously. I spent a day poking at it with a sharp stick and BANG. Everything seems to look ok and fit inside all the columns now. The player is thanks to Libsyn and has been added here as well as the Gigcastarama page. If you notice anything acting up please say so and I will look at it.

In other news 24 hour comic day is almost here. Will you be joining in?

Also, The Guest Archive and the Drive-by index have been updated. So follow the “Guests and Interview” and “Reviews and Drive-bys” Links on the right or up top.

Now there was some grumbling that big shot comic stars would be overshadowing the little guys on Drunkduck. With tonight’s launch of Cowboys and Aliens I was expecting a big POW on the front page of DD. Instead I kinda had to go looking for it. I’m a little surprised but not unhappy to see that life didn’t change much now that Cowboys and Aliens is up. It’s business as usual (if you ignore the forum grumbling).

Seeing as how the earth didn’t stop spinning lets take a first look at Cowboys and Aliens.

At first glance you will notice a very wanted poster style theme. A few small spots where the menu background and the main items don’t look perfect but I’m nitpicking a little, it’s every bit the movie poster I would expect out of a professional book. I will stop you here and remind you that you should check out the trailer. The sound effects really bring it to life.

Here’s a little story background for you that I borrowed from the site.

Cowboys & Aliens was created by Scott Mitchell Rosenberg and written by Fred Van Lente and Andrew Foley, both highly respected comics writers. Luciano Lima, whose worked on everything from Wolverine and X-Force to The Mask, did pencils. Inks were done by the team from Magic Eye Studios, who have worked on comics projects like Street Fighter and Stargate, as well as classics like Donald Duck and Kim Possible. The colour (he likes it spelled that way) was done by Andy Elder whose worked on Warhead and Testament. You can find out more about all these folks on their bios page.

Cowboys & Aliens is an alternate history concept. A “what if” story that moves the battle of the Old West from between the Cowboys and Indians to a new invader, one requiring the once battling Cowboys and Indians to team up if they are to have even a hope of surviving.

On a side note Here there be robots is in their recommended list.

I just clicked on the story and I’m loving the look of it so far. I recommend you start from the beginning. I have a bad habit of reading things from latest to first. The story so far draw parallels between early European settlers treatment of native Americans and an alien race that looks to have forcefully resettled another alien race.

That’s all I have so far. I recomend you check out Cowboys and Aliens. If you spot something I missed about it please point it out.

Wapsi Square is on my top ten favorite webcomic. Plus Paul Taylor and his family are living in Minnesota so they get extra points with me. Paul’s family can use a little help right now and at the same time you can get your hands on some great art. If nothing else please take a moment to look over what’s up for auction and pass the word.

Thank You

http://www.blanklabelcomics.com/?p=92

Taken from the Blank Lable News and repeted here to help get the word out:

Blank Label Comics is announcing a fund-raiser for BLC member Paul Taylor. Paul’s first child was born a month prematurely on Aug. 18, and he has required an extended hospital stay. Paul and his wife have been through quite an ordeal — which continues to this day.

Extended hospital stays turn into extended hospital bills, so we’d like to help our friend. Several BLC members and friends are auctioning off original art and other amazing items over the next two weeks. The money made from these auctions will be donated directly to Paul Taylor and his family.

A full list of auction items appears below. All list items will be linked to the auctions as they go live. Some items may be added to the list as the next two weeks progress, so check back often.

Finally, if you’re not interested in an auction item but would still like to help, feel free to go to http://www.wapsisquare.com and make a donation directly to Paul through his PayPal donation button which appears under the comic on the left-hand side of the screen (look for Monica wearing a “SUPPORT WAPSI” T-shirt.

If you knew Lea, you’d know how devastating that is.

She’s lost a great deal of her family’s possessions, including irreplaceable art. She doesn’t yet know the full accounting of what’s been lost at this time.

Most know Lea as the brilliant creator of such works as Rumble Girls and Cathedral Child. She drew the Marvel Mangaverse PUNISHER book, and has drawn for TRANSMETROPOLITAN, among many other accomplishments. She is also the co-founder and original editor for GIRL-A-MATIC, one of the most important venues for female-friendly comics created to date.

She’s also my friend, and it’s entirely possible I wouldn’t have a career in comics if she hadn’t asked me to write Killer Princesses for her to draw.

And finally, Lea is one of the last great firebrand hellraisers in comics.

Lea has two (wonderful, amazing) special needs children and right now they need a place to stay and some clothes to wear. More than that, they need
some help, and fast, in the form of donations to her paypal account. Lea’s a proud person so I’m going to ask FOR her. This is important, and a great chance to do a wonderful thing for a creator who has consistently enriched this industry we all love so much. Please, take a moment and send WHATEVER YOU CAN to Lea’s paypal account and help make this time a little bit less painful for someone who would do the same for you if the positions were reversed.

If you’re a retailer, I ask that you set up a donations jar. If you’re a creator, I ask you to think of how devastating this would be to your career and donate what you can. If you’re a reader, I’m asking you to take a moment and hit the paypal link. You’ll be doing something heroic and you’ll feel great about it, I promise.

Read what Lea had to post on a neighbor’s computer while wearing her pajamas at: Livejournal.com/users/divalea

Donate (PLEASE) to her paypal account at: divalea@gmail.com

Finally, if I understand the story correctly (as told to me by Lea’s good friend and current Girl-a-matic editor), it was Lea’s daughter hearing the smoke alarm that allowed the family to get out in time, so for God’s sake, do everyone you love a favor and CHECK YOUR SMOKE ALARMS.

Thank you so much for helping. Really, any amount you can send will make a difference. That’s all I can say.

And also, if you have a blog or a myspace account, please spread this around as best you can. Every little bit will help and every eye that sees this might be someone who donates.

Sincerely and gratefully,

Gail Simone

Thank You Gail and good luck Lea

Your my favorite “Buster” out there and I want to see you and yours doing well.

Today I was a bit suprised at how sneaky he can be. Marks comic Zortic could be described as a wacky romp through space and watch out for falling parody. A few days ago Mark posted a comic that not only fit in well with his story line but for me personally hit home. Reading this strip I had the thought that maybe more of us need to hold up that sign.

I knew we needed to bring a video camera to Megacon. Just Kidding (OK maybe next year). I should have linked this much earlier but you need to check out the Digital Strips Video interview with Jennie Breeden of Devils Panties fame.

http://www.digitalstrips.com/2006/08/interview-with-jennie-breeden.html

I watched hypnotically through both part one and part two. They cover (as usual) a ton of good ground talking about the how-to’s's of surviving as webcomic artist. When your done watching it you can hop over to Jennies forums and tell her how much that camera loves her. Seriously it was a good interview.

We here at Transplant are putting together an anthology. It will have a loose horror theme, and be a full color 6×9 inch book. Several of our members are involved and are writing an exclusive 3-10 page story for it. With us all being divas, we are all insisting that our stories start on a right hand page.

Which is were you come in.

We need an undetermined amount of pin-up artwork to use as filler, so everyone can start on the same side of the book.

The prize? You get your picture published in our book, if we decide to use it.

The deadline? Arbitrarily, August 31st.

How to enter: Post an image in this thread, or e-mail your image to the Admin. By enetering the contest, you are giving us the one time right to publish your work in our Transplanthology. We will not use your image for any other reason, or alter it in any way.

Things to remeber: Your image should go along with the loose horror theme. This is a wildly interpretable subject, though, so you shouldn’t have any problems.

While Sequential Tart isn’t one of my daily reads I do enjoy reading some of their interviews. So today when checking hit logs I noticed that we had been linked from ST. It was good to see Lea out there spreading the word about the NAN Grant. I even laughed a bit as I read her comment of “GOD, THIS IS SHIT!”. I could almost hear her say it in the back of my head.

I read the whole thing and it pointed out something to me. I’m not a very good Fan Boy. I had to look up “All Start Batman and Robin” on Wikipedia to find out that the book came out in July of 2005. I still stop in the comic shop from time to time and buy a few books but it’s been years since I really cared what DC or Marvel do to their titles. Maybe they can somehow spin that statement into a 22 issue crossover series that restarts the Gigcast universe and comes with a nice foil embossed cover….

Oh yea, just cause you can do a thing doesn’t mean you should. I think that was the words I said when I stopped collecting books.

To get back on track. Lea was great enough to quote Our friend Mike Dean:

ST: Lastly, is there something in particular you would like the NAN Grant’s critics to consider? A parting shot, as it were?

LH: I love the self-examination of cartoonist Mike Dean in the comments section of my recent interview at Gigca: “I’ll have to admit, my first thought was much like grotesque mole-man? why should others be bathed in light as I stew in obscurity, but listening to the podcast really plunged some insight on an otherwise unknown world to me (that being the world of pro comics). While I sympathize with the initial feeling of exclusion, I have to applaud the effort as any attempt to promote egalitarian practices between men and women is a good thing”.

“I think the most exciting part of The NAN Grant is the potential fusion between profession practices and the widely amateur driven styles of web comics.”

That’s some insight we could all learn from, and it takes chutzpah to share like that. Mike also allows he gained insight. It’d be great if more people whose knee-jerk reaction to charges of sexism and inequity in comics is “everything is fine” would ask themselves, “If everything’s so awesome, why are so many people saying it’s not?”

So even though we’re now called “Gigca” it’s cool that you thought to link our little site at all.

Thanks Again

Scott (“GOD, THIS IS SHIT!”)

I previously haven’t kept up with it and I’m not going to blame modern tales or similar sites about their methods. I think they have a good idea. Hell I think they have a great idea where you subscribe to get the archives. I think they need to go further with it and bind up the archives and sell them once a year. I also think they may have been a little ahead of their time. I think that model can work now with as popular as iTunes and similar rss feeds are now. Sorry I got side tracked. ICE is really well written and the story is packed FULL of every thing that makes a good drama. It’s got love, and new addictions, It has bad guys with moral quirks. I like to think of it as having flavor. More then that ICE is consistant the art is great with a prisma color marker look (remind me to ask her how she colors) and the story full and could stand on its own.

What I’m saying is go check out ICE and read through the archives. When your done go back and read Demonology 101 (Also by Faith) and check out the rest of her site.

Wes Molebash over at YHTComic was kind enough to drop us an email with his news announcements. This fits right in with our Gigcast motto of “Make the guest do your work and take all the credit”. Thanks Wes!

Cool Announcement Number the First . . .

I’m finally ready to start selling archival prints of the comic strip. In order for me to purchase the shipping supplies, I’m going to start the selling off with a pre-sale. Basically, I need to sell at least 6 prints in order to purchase the mailing materials. Once I have the materials I can ship the artwork. Unfortunately, the first few customers will have to be “guinea pigs” which means they’ll probably have to wait a few weeks to get their artwork.

All the artwork will be printed on glossy, 8 X 10 photo paper. I’ll ship the artwork flat and double-packaged in a mylar-bag and a cardboard mailing envelope. The archival prints will sell for FIFTEEN BUCKS! That includes shipping.

Almost all of the comic strips are available to be printed, so just e-mail me with your request. Please include the number of the comic (if possible), and/or a description of the comic strip you want to purchase. I’ll send you an invoice via PayPal for the comic strip(s) you ordered. With PayPal, you can make payments through your PayPal account, with a major credit card, or a check through your bank account.

If you have any questions, feel free to drop me an e-mail or give me a shout on the message board.

Cool Announcement Number the Second . . .

As I was drawing my comics last week, I began thinking about all the strips I have laying around in my closet that have never really seen the light of day. I’ve put a few of these strips in the message boards, but most of them are just laying in a box in my closet.

So here’s what I’m gonna do: Starting this weekend, I’m going to publish these old <!-- D(["mb","<span style\u003d\"font-weight:bold\">YHT comics every Saturday and Sunday on my website (<a href\u003d\"http://www.yhtcomic.com\" target\u003d\"_blank\" onclick\u003d\"return top.js.OpenExtLink(window,event,this)\">www.yhtcomic.com\n). Did you know that <span style\u003d\"font-weight:bold\">You\'ll Have That was originally about Andy and Steve in high school? It\'s true, and you\'ll get to see all of those strips starting this Saturday, July 15.\n

So be sure to stop by the website this Saturday for the first in a series of comics I like to call <span style\u003d\"font-weight:bold\">You\'ll Have That: The Lost Episodes. I\'ll publish some commentary in the blog, and you\'ll see how a lot of the characters have evolved. It\'ll be a great time for everyone!\n

Hi, this is very cool for our female cartoonists…

found here: http://divalea.livejournal.com/343450.html

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WOMEN WEBCOMICKER GRANT NAN

PURPOSE
In order to foster women publishing independently, with economy, and as owners of what they create, I will award FOUR grants annually, of a year’s free hosting at WebComicsNation.com, to women making a regularly-updating new or existing webcomic of any genre or style.
The recipients will have unlimited data storage and bandwidth, the ability to choose to support their work with ads, and a storefront for selling merchandise.

The name of the grant is “Nan”, after the “digital person” Nan 11 from Rumble Girls: Silky Warrior Tansie. In RG, Nan agitates, comments on, and works behind the scenes to help the heroine, Raven, come to the understanding that being her own girl is the key to her strength.

I believe the Web already has what women wanting to make comics need, and that it has and continues to transform American comics from a work-for-hire Boy’s Club to a stage for everyone to perform on and be seen. The Web is living up to its promise, and comics can, too.

DEADLINE
Submissions are now open. Deadline for submissions is FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 2006, 6PM Central.ANNOUNCEMENT OF GRANTS
NAN Grant recipients will be notified WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 2006, via email. A press release will be sent out concurrently. (Because, dadgum, we all need good news by Wednesday.)

ELIGIBILITY
1. Persons applying MUST be female. You will have to provide me with a document such as a driver’s license, birth certificate, military I.D., etc. stating you are female. In the case of team comics (no more than three persons on a team), the entire team MUST be female, and remain so for the period of the grant.
2. Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
3. The work submitted must be free of contractural obligation for web publication, must be the property of the applicant(s), must not infringe on other’s rights, nor be libelous or slanderous.
4. I am kindly disposed towards manga and Oni-like comics, but good comics most of all.
5. Previous experience a plus, but not neccessary.
6. The NAN Grant is open to ALL female webcomickers, regardless of experience. This includes young, brand-new comickers, older brand-new comickers, experienced comickers now paying a success tax for bandwidth use, professionals from other fields. You have to either already be making a comic that needs hosting, or want to host a new one.
7. Applicant bears sole responsibility for following these guidelines. Failure to comply with items 1.-3. will result in revocation of awarded grant.

RIGHTS
1. Applicants retain ALL rights to their work. Submissions are the sole property of their creator(s), period.
2. Comics published with a NAN Grant that are later collected for print are requested to add “Originally published in (year) on Webcomicsnation.com, with the aid of Women Webcomicker Grant Nan” to their indicia.
3. I reserve the right to use applicant’s names and representative art to publicize NAN without further compensation. (This means I will tell people who’s applied, who’s won, and point the inquiring to their work.)
4. NAN Grant recipients are encouraged to crow as soon as they recieve notification emails.

GUIDELINES
1. Ideally, BEFORE YOU SEND ME YOUR PROPOSAL, BUY or BORROW and READ “How To Write a Book Proposal” by Michael Larsen. (Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1582972516/qid=1066192984/sr=2-1/ref=sr_2_1/103-7710080-8024610)
While it is geared towards non-fiction proposals, it does teach everything you need to know about crafting a readable proposal.
What I do not want to see is your entire story written out in a single-spaced block in email. Have mercy.

2. Show me you already know how to put a comic/images online. I want to see clean presentation (which means learning how to use an image editing program to take out grays from scans), good lettering (many decent free fonts available at blambot.com, so there’s no excuse for lettering in Times New Roman), and basic HTML (which will greatly enhance your experience in hosting with WebComicsNation.com).
Excellent proposals by Lynn Lau and Leigh Dragoon that won their creators contracts at GirlAMatic.com can be found here:

http://tentative.net/jupiter/

And here:

http://www.spidric.com/proposal/default.asp

3. Email me at nanoneone@gmail.com, subject line “NAN: (title)”, otherwise my spam filters will eat it.
To this address, send me the URL of your submission, and attach a scan of a document that verifies your gender.
Don’t tell me it isn’t your best work. If it’s not, why should I look at it?
If you do things like use “u” for “you”, “4″ for “four” and “LOL” for punctuation, don’t when you write me. I expect to see a command of conventional English. Also, sell yourself without resorting to emoticons. They’re for casual correspondence, which a proposal is not, at least not to me.

4. It’s okay to be disappointed if I feel your comic isn’t right for Nan Grant, because no one enjoys rejection. I regret I will be unable to provide detailed guidance or critiques of submitted material. I hope you will submit again.

5. I and grateful to you for submitting, no matter what my answer is.

Over at Smack Jeeves they have come up with what I think is a great feature for anyone who wants to quickly skim over a comic and get a feel of it before you dig in and read it.

When you mouse over the title of a comic in a Smack Jeeves comic archive you get a small thumbnail of the comic itself. Granted it’s to small to read it in that fashion but it certainly is bit enough to get an idea of what is going on.

See an example of it on Jack Magic’s Archives
