I was listening to Tall Tales Radio this morning and heard the interview with Norm Feuti who does a comic called Retail and another one called Gill.

I need to tell you that Gill is one of the best comics I have read. If a paper can’t take a risk and print that then they are blind as well as stupid. Gill is a great and humorous look at how real people live. Yes kids do play with trash. Yes parents get divorced. Live with it and print it you idiots.

While you wait for papers to wake up or die go read Gill at Gillcomic.com

BY JENNIFER M. CONTINO
Late yesterday, Platinum Studios sent out a press release announcing they’d teamed with IM Global to create a Hero By Night TV series. DJ Coffman’s Hero By Night was the 2006 winner of Platinum’s Comic Book Challenge. Coffman wasn’t informed of the deal. He woke up to dozens of phone messages and emails about the PR. Coffman’s a long time friend of THE PULSE, so we wanted to get a few comments from him about the potential live-action Hero By Night series and find out about his involvement with the musical group, Flobots.

1) As you well know since you saw the end, I met my goal of creating 24 full-color comic strips for 24 Hour Comics Day: http://oycomics.com/2008/10/20/24-hour-comics-day-the-aftermath-2008/ (followed the next day by my Honorable Mention in the WCRCA’s, but you already knew that too).

2) I’m sure others have mentioned it already, but in case not, the Half Pixel crew has acquired and relaunched http://www.webcomics.com as a hub for the webcomics community.

3) Found out about a fairly new webcomic with promise called “Backyard Frontier” by cartoonist Dennis West. From the write-up on his site: “Backyard Frontier is a comic strip about a boy and his alien and their adventures as they try to make sense of this crazy world. Come back every weekday to see what they keep getting themselves into!”

4) ExtraLife Radio over at http://www.myextralife.com is soon to record its 200th episode. Hi Guys,
I just heard the Gigcast for the first time. I've been doing my webcomic since 05, and I've heard of your podcast a number of times, but this was the first time I've listened. I bookmarked it and I'll be back.

I checked out that "Union of Heroes". Its not that far along yet, but I like it. I look forward to seeing how far they can take that super hero concept. WIll it mostly be regular 2o somethings talking, or will it be full out "xmen" style action? This is a style that is surprisingly rare and they seem to be off to a pretty good start...

If you are looking for more material to review, you could check out my comic: www.cy-boar.com
That's what I'm busy coloring now while I listen...

RACHEL NABORS NEEDS TEAM COMICS!
Rachel Nabors needs some serious dosh for dental surgery. She’s got no insurance (oh, don’t we know how much fun that is), and she must have the surgery. Rachel is a hardworking young manga-ka who’s created hundreds of pages of manga, and self-published her work. Rachel also educates and supports other cartoonists through her site, MangaPunk and is a member of the women cartoonists collective Women’s Work.

Here’s her post, with pictures and an explanation of her needs and the PayPal button:
http://crowhen.livejournal.com/131452.html

HOW TO BE HELPFUL:
Send whatever you can.
Post your support at her LJ.
Either. Both.
REPOST the URL above and explain what she needs and why. Feel free to copy and paste this post.
Many people giving a tiny bit makes a LOT. Send what you can. When King gets his next check, we’re sending some.

HOW TO BE UNHELPFUL:
Suggesting ANYTHING. Rachel has exhausted avenues for dental school (she doesn’t have one that does surgery), loans (come ON, why is that the default suggestion?), Hero Initiative, a move to another country (how unbelievably loutish), etc.

Bottom line, Rachel deserves the help. She works hard, she’s worked to make the business better, she’s trustworthy.

Away, my monkeys! Help Rachel! FLY!

I haven’t written a “Bad Fan” in a while (once again proving that I am indeed a bad fan). I tend to do this. I work in waves. If I could find a job that I could work for 6 months take 6 months off and still keep my family feed I would. It’s just how I function. So here is what I am going to do. I am going to just get up off my ass and show you what I’ve been reading. It’s not a real intelligent list but at least it’s getting me started.

Devils Panties is usually my first read of the morning. Not that it’s my favorite but my list is alphabetical and D is the top of my list. If you haven’t read Devils Panties your blind and I have no pity for you. Devils Panties is a must read slice of life comic and is the inspiration of many comics that have come after it. Including mine.

The Errant Apprentice -Â Even if I didn’t talk to Kevin often I would love this comic. Here is the short description “In a world where fantasy and magic are reborn, only one man stands for the ideals of knighthood. He is Terry Lingal, the Errant Apprentice”. The idea behind this is that in the mid 1970′s magic returns to Earth and with it magical creatures and those who would use magic to their own ends. I like the story because it’s about a guy who’s trying to do the right thing because it’s what you should do and not for some greater reward.

Girls With Slingshots – Someone needs to hire Danielle Corsetto and force her to write network TV shows. The pacing is great the whole cast have style and the art rocks. Danielle Corsetto is taking her comic daily now so please check it out. She put tons of work into it.

Malfunction Junction – Another slice of life comic that I think should find it’s way into magazines. I also dig Matt Milby art style. A big part of why I think I like it is in Matt’s statement “I do not write a journal comic because I think anyone particularly cares about my life, but because I am most inspired by everyday stuff that happens to me”.

My lunch break is almost over with so I will pick this list up next time.

On a recent Girls With Slingshots update Danielle Corsetto posted a “How I Do Comics” tutorial. This strikes me as exciting on a few levels.

Danielle kicks ass (everything else I wrote before was the product of sugar and wishful thinking. I have NOT met Danielle YET!)

GWS is one of my favorite comics and any glimpse of how it’s done makes me happy. I’m not going to look a gift horse in the mouth. It’s not a ground breaking tutorial that makes me say “THAT”S THE TRICK!”. I am a process junkie seeing how she roughs, then she moves on makes me excited to draw. She does do something I don’t and it might be something I change. She adds the word balloons and then the art. I’m the other way.

Like her comic her tutorial is clean well done and presented in a professional fashion. It’s a giant reminder that there are some basic steps I keep skipping that derail my process every time.

So yea I recommend you hop over and check it out. I’m personally going to try her method out and see if it helps me stay on top of updates.

Ok this is a case where I’m doing the right thing and I’m going to talk about something I just stumbled on while browsing the smackjeeves.com forum.

Gibson Twist is the creator of a few webcomics. Pictures of You, Cheap Shots, and The Whiskey Devils. I’m going to start right out with one of his comics.

I most certainly laughed my ass off thank you very much.

I started writing this to praise the webcomic Pictures of You, which attracted my attention with images of likely my favorite Cure song. Pictures of You is very well written. The self narration moves the story quickly enough to not get dull. There is plenty of soul searching and the main character Peter. You will please forgive me as I have only just started reading it but the short of it is that Pictures of You is like a reflective memory of Peters life in college. Gibson Twist doesn’t take short cuts on the art either. Honestly it’s one of the better Black and White comics I have read. More people need to be talking about Gibson’s work.

I’ll cut this off here. Check out Gibson Twist’s work. you will honestly love it.

It’s Monday and I’m having a tough time getting going this morning. I thought I would get my brain going by cruising through my Drunkduck favorites. That brings me to todays Bad Fan. I should have shared this on with you all the day I found it. Tales of the Revenant by Dave Flora. I know very little about Mr. Flora but his single panel pulp-occult comic is SO DAMN BEAUTIFUL! Here is a rundown of what I do know. The story takes place in 1947. The main charectors are Charles Pallentine, a masked vigilante who’s soul was trapped in a ring. That ring was found by young man Eddie Shaw. Eddie agrees to be Pallentine’s host and help track down Pallentine’s killers. Ok, that’s enough to get me interested but here is what I think is the best part. The art is just beautifully detailed.

Welcome to another addition of Bad Fan where I publicly admit how horrible I am at paying attention.

Todays Bad Fan is about Dinosaur Comics. Your saying to me now “Scott you don’t read Dinosaur comics?” and I then say “no I usually avoid clip art comic.” You then beat me with a stick I point to a few really really bad clip art strips that have ruined me. We then both feel bad and go out and drink beer.

Let’s just skip to the beer part.

So today I noticed that we have a new ad in Project Wonderful. You guessed it, it’s Dinosaur Comics. I figure I will make an effort to read any comic advertised on the site. I’m here to tell you that Ryan North may have me hooked with the first strip I read.

http://www.qwantz.com/index.pl?comic=945

I so very VERY much want to read a alternate universe story where no matter what Superman does EVERYONE DIES. I don’t care if at the end you make him wake up from a bad dream and all this time it was Luthor messing with him.

Ok, back to the why I don’t like clip art comics / why I like this one.

I’m an art whore. I will keep reading bad books just to look at the way an artist does backgrounds. A story has to be very bad before I give up on an artist I like. This is also why I don’t read some book. If everyone looks the same why should I care. This is that part that bothers me most about clip art comics. Yes having a dinosaur say these lines is funnier then having a Mario Bros Sprite say them but it’s the same joke.

It takes longer for me to become a fan of writers. I’ll go years reading a book before I discover who writes it (that’s why I’m a bad fan). Ryan seems to have a good handle on writing but it took an out of ordinary event to get me reading. Normally that event is the art. Ryan if you read this don’t feel bad the same thing happened with the book Stranger in a Strange Land had it been cheaper to buy batteries then it was to buy a paperback book in that airport I would never have read anything by Robert A. Heinlein.

I still don’t like clip art comics very much. To often their the tool of those of us (myself included) that want to take shortcuts on a creative process. Often that leads to not only repetitious art but repetitious stories and humor. I haven’t made my way through the full archive. Trust me I probably won’t get the chance but it seems to me that Ryan has been keeping the strips fresh.

So there in a Nutshell is why I’m a bad fan. I recommend you check out Dinosaur Comics. No I won’t be going out of my way to read others like it unless some extraordinary event brings one to my attention.

(So is this where I would put I give it 30 stars out of 30 or would that just sound stupid? Really like I could actually give out a star. Do you know hot those things are?)

Scott (The Bad Fan)
