Cartoonist Celebrates His Comic Strip’s First Birthday!

Cartoonist Denver Brubaker’s webcomic, Tales of a Checkered Man, is celebrating its first birthday!  Brubaker launched the comic on April 6th of 2010. Tales of a Checkered Man is the story of an average hero who turns to a life of crime-fighting, despite his bad luck and acrophobia. Think “Charlie Brown as a masked vigilante,” Brubaker says. Brubaker, 35, is the creator, writer and artist behind this twice weekly webcomic. “The reaction to the comic has far exceeded my expectations,” the artist notes, “I’m so happy to have reached this milestone with a respectably growing readership in tow.”  Looking forward, Brubaker is content with continuing writing and drawing the misadventures of his costumed hero.  “I love this character.  He’s been a part of my life for years and years, and it’s exciting to be able to share him with everyone and to have people tell me how much they love him back,” the cartoonist says, “It’s a wonderful feeling.”  Brubaker is also now in the stages of planning a book which will collect the entire first year of comic strips.

I draw a webcomic www.afineexample.com and I like it.  You might like it too!  It’s about a pirate and greed and jokes and the economy.  I’ve been on and off working on it for the past 4 years but I recently did a big redesign and I think it’s finally fit for mass consumption.  I’d love a review or a bump or something, but if not hey no hard feelings everybody’s busy these days.  Thanks for doing what you do, and thank you in advance for your time and consideration.

Established colourist Kris Carter will be joining the team. You might recognize the name – he wrote and provided the art for “Waterworld“, our eighth issue. But even if you haven’t read that you might recognise his work from comics such as Transformers: Nefarious, Doctor Who: The Forgotten, Torchwood: Rift War, and Red Dwarf: Songs In The Key Of Files. Clearly, Kris a man with some solid scifi comic credentials.

Hi JT, If it’s not too late for news this week, I have a little something. In order to get ahead for the convention season, I’m going to reduce ETI-PI to 2 days per week for a while.  However, to make up for it, I’m going to present some “additional content” fiction over at Zortic.  Specifically I’m going to be introducing “The Adventures of Blast Rocketron” starting next Wednesday (bonus trivia points to anyone who remembers who Blast Rocketron is). 2) I’m sure others have mentioned it already, but in case not, the Half Pixel crew has acquired and relaunched http://www.webcomics.com as a hub for the webcomics community.

3) Found out about a fairly new webcomic with promise called “Backyard Frontier” by cartoonist Dennis West. From the write-up on his site: “Backyard Frontier is a comic strip about a boy and his alien and their adventures as they try to make sense of this crazy world. Come back every weekday to see what they keep getting themselves into!”

4) ExtraLife Radio over at http://www.myextralife.com is soon to record its 200th episode. I think they’ll be doing it next Monday evening (not sure on the time), and they usually have a live uStream chat: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/extralife-radio

Mark Mekkes announces that his original webcomic creation will return on October 4th

So, on Saturday 10/4/2008, Zortic will return as a webcomic. While the comic will be recognizable, the universe will be different. “Don’t count on knowing what’s happened before,” said Mekkes, “This is a new universe and it will be going back to the beginning to really show who these characters are and where they came from. And the parody is going to be replaced by a much richer universe and stronger situations that’s really going to enhance the character development. But don’t worry; while it’s a perfect entry point for new readers, there will still be plenty of ‘Easter Eggs’ and other hidden surprises for fans of the original archives to enjoy.”

I just heard the Gigcast for the first time.  I’ve been doing my webcomic since 05, and I’ve heard of your podcast a number of times, but this was the first time I’ve listened.  I bookmarked it and I’ll be back.

I checked out that “Union of Heroes”.  Its not that far along yet, but I like it.  I look forward to seeing how far they can take that super hero concept.  WIll it mostly be regular 2o somethings talking, or will it be full out “xmen” style action?  This is a style that is surprisingly rare and they seem to be off to a pretty good start…

Grant Gould broke the news last night (at least online) that he, Tom Hodges, Katie Cook, and Jeff Carlisle will be working on a The Clone Wars web comic for StarWars.com to accompany the tv series. Hodges revealed more this morning on the TFN boards:

The quick version is each week, we’ll be given a story leading into that weeks episode. Now it could be a direct tie-in or peripherally connected from a distance because some episodes have story arcs not connected to each and every episode. Keep in mind, the series will not always be about Anakin, Obi-Wan and Padme. It will flesh out characters we’ve only seen bits and pieces of.

This will also NOT be “web-strip” format. It will be full color, comic format and each story will be 5 pages in length.

About two years ago, Steve Troop very publicly announced his retirement from webcomics.

“Apparently, my retirement was greatly exaggerated,” Steve writes, “because Melonpool is back on a four-day-a-week schedule. There’s something about these characters that just won’t go away, and I’ve been thinking about this revival for the past year or so. ”

When poked for more information, Steve elaborated.

“In a way it was Brad, Kris, Dave and Scott that inspired me to come back — but not in the way you might think. I’m an rabid listener of the Webcomics Weekly podcast and by about week 7, I was chomping at the bit to get back to the drawing board.”

So, for those of you new to Melonpool, this is a good place to start. Steve has also revived the New Reader Guide which outlines the first seven years of the strip.
